You live in an area with boil water alert
Natural weather phenomena or the passage of time can cause contaminants to seep into your water source. Flooding or agricultural runoff that happens near your water source can infect your water supply with chemicals and organic bacteria. Either the groundwater around your well can become contaminated, or the well’s walls or sanitary seals can deteriorate, come loose, or become damaged in some way.
Industrial activity, local agricultural operations, sewer overflows, and septic tanks in your vicinity, can cause these contaminants to be released into the groundwater or storage facilities. Many of these chemicals, if left in your water, can cause serious adverse health effects. The only way to know if your water requires treatment is to conduct a test of your water quality. There are local entities that can do the testing on demand for approximately $200 to $300
Most homeowners receive their drinking water from a local municipality or water agency. There are a few resources available in each particular area that help you learn what contaminants are present in your water.
Homeowners that receive water from the city can check their current municipal water quality report. Each municipality is required to send residents a copy of the annual report.
About 87% of the population receives their water from a public supply system. However, approximately 12% of homes use private sources (wells) for their water needs. The vast majority of homes use water stored in wells or reservoirs serving the area. If you’re not sure if you receive water from a private well or a municipal source, the question to ask is “do you receive a water bill in the mail or by email?” If you don’t, it’s very likely that you have a private well.
